PART 5 - A BIGGER BETTER DEAL

Her boss has been diligent all evening, working hard to obtain key contacts for the company. His natural ability to command a room impresses her. When she first started at the company, he inspired her and boasted about how much potential he saw in her. At first, he was more than willing to help her grow and always seemed willing to provide her with the resources and the motivation to excel. Then one day, the management above him recognized her hard work at their annual staff meeting. In that moment, as she started excelling beyond his hold, he suddenly had more than enough reasons for why she could only work on certain projects or could only attend certain meetings. It seemed that she was allowed to succeed, but only as long as her success was kept hidden behind the doors of administration and under his control.

Her boss is not entirely heartless, however; he just understands business and how the Bourgeoisie system works. He has made much success for himself. He does respect the work she does and the smarts she brings to the company, but he thinks that she just doesn’t have what it takes to be a leader.

On one occasion he mentioned to her that she is too sensitive, too emotional for business. She assumed he thought this because the lines of morality in her book cannot be crossed as often as they need to be. He does not let her know how much he values her, because then she might get too confidant and wind up rising above him in the company. He needs her to be dependent on him, so he tells her she still has a lot to learn, especially about “these people,” as he calls them. “You don’t like my rules?” he will say, “Then go find another job. I gave you a real opportunity here and if you do go and get another job, they’ll make you fetch their coffee. Is that what you want? I’m giving you the chance of a lifetime.”

So what does he do? He keeps her as his wing girl. She’s great at logistics, but to become a leader in this line of work requires someone with a bit more charisma. It is, after all, only for the bold of heart.

She’s brought back to the present when her eyes connect with her boss’s across the room. He gestures for her to come over. She moves in his direction, motioning to the girl that she will be back.

Her boss introduces her to the man at his side. “She is one of the finest we have on the team and is extremely qualified to handle the new account.” He smiles and adds proudly, like a teacher praising his star pupil, “She is like you and me-she understands how to get things done.”

She shakes the man’s hand. He gives her a brief inspection she has come to know as the Bourgeoisie scan, its only purpose being to detect an imposter, but her boss has apparently persuaded him otherwise, so he cracks a smile.
